CAIRNS TROPICAL ZOO staff has been eagerly
awaiting the arrival of a family of five Ring-tailed Lemurs
from Melbourne Zoo. Months of constructing a purpose built
enclosure nicknamed the “Lemur Lodge” finally
came to completion with the arrival of the lemurs today.
The “lodge” features all manner of climbing
structures including ropes, vines and platforms to make
them feel at home.
Mammal staff said the new arrivals settled in immediately
and were getting on well with their neighbours the dingoes
and cassowaries.
Ring-tailed Lemurs are primates and are native to Madagascar
– remember the animated movie with King Julien as
the head lemur – and like many species in the world
today are under threat from habit destruction.
Females rule in this species and that includes getting the
best of the food, right through to their choice of the males.
These Madagascan animals have distinctive features including
a long striped tail which assists with balance, and to attract
a mate. They also are sun worshipers spending much of the
morning sitting Buddha-like with arms extended soaking up
the morning rays.
