Mudflats not

from dredging

A FOUR-YEAR, $300,000 study of Trinity Inlet has found dredging of the shipping channel has not been a factor in mud migrating to northern beaches waters.

"Natural mud flows from the Barron River are the prime source of theTrinity Bay mudflats," co-chief investigator Dr Bob Carter of JCU said in November.

Fellow investigator Dr Piers Larcombe said mud from dredging the channel

FILM STAR Keanu Reeves was unrecognized when he bought sunglasses and clothes at Carol Farley's Paradiso Leisurewear last month.

Staff member Lynn Hart said he signed "K. Reeves" on his credit card slip, but she still didn't realize who he was.

"It wasn't until I saw his photo on the front page of Cairns Post that I woke up," she said.

Reeves told her he was one of a party of 30 staying at Double Island.

Lynn said they arrived on the island by helicopter just before New Year and came over by boat when they needed to. "I think they were guests of the owner, but they may

have hired the island - I don't know," she said.

Mayor Kevin Byrne said that as far as he knew, the island was a private facility and presumably the group were guests of the owner.

We believe other films stars in the party included Keifer Sutherland, Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt with wife Jennifer Aniston. Reeves is in Australia filming a sequel to The Matrix.

dispersed seaward rather than into shore.

He said the growth of this mud posed no threat to the reef off Green Island or the Great Barrier Reef.

Referring to the occasional appearance of mud on beaches, Dr Larcombe said mud lumps on the northern beaches were exposed when the relatively small amounts of sand were eroded by storms and other natural factors.

He said the sand returned in time.

Stars keen on our animals

RUMOUR has it that the film stars on Double Island paid Wild World $1,000 per animal for someone to take ten different animals over to the island and explain all about them.

We checked with Wild World but they

said they had signed a confidentiality agreement and were not allowed to talk about any such arrangement.

Another source did, however, confirm they took animals over to the island.

Entrance to Wild World costs $22 for adults and $11 for a child.

WANT a night or longer at a Tableland resort in splendid isolation with a magnificent view, impeccable self-contained accommodation including a spa, king-sized bed, TV, and no phone?

It's only $210 per night for two, (less for longer stay) including breakfast hamper. Also hamper containing dinner for two an optional extra for $50.

Your hamper is left outside your door, and a light goes on inside to let you know it's there.

In other words, you have privacy with a capital P.

Council backs power lines

underground

COUNCIL has recommended underground cables for the beaches.

All but one councillor voted last month for Option 2, viz. 22,000V cables in pipelines costing $12.2 million with room for more cables as needed. Advice was sent to Ergon for their consideration.

Other options were either $29.6 million for two 132,000V cables and a new substation or $11.6 million for overhead powerlines and a new substation with some underground cables.

Cnr Annette Sheppard said the beaches community supported underground cables.

"The tourism industry is vital to the

region, and the scenic route between Cairns and Port Douglas is heavily used by tourists," she said.

Sheppard said a certain aesthetic quality was needed to fit in with the environment.

Cnr Sno Bonneau said the $12.2 million proposal would cater for predicted growth. He said the plan was for a full underground power line from Kamerunga to Kewarra Beach which "allowed for gradual upgrading as needed."

Editor : We hope the future upgrading means that Palm Cove, also, will do away with overhead lines. And don't forget the cyclone factor.
