New shopping centre approved

PLANS for a shopping centre at Clifton Beach next to the existing shopping centre have been approved by council.

Cnr Sno Bonneau said sole entry would be via Elford St at the existing post office site. The plan includes room for 20 stores including a major supermarket, a chemist, drive-through bottle shop and post office. There will be 446 car parks including 337 in the basement.

Clifton Beach solicitor Ian Millyard said he did not expect too many objections to the centre."It will save people the trip of having to go all the way down to Smithfield," he said.

The developers are FTV Holdings Pty Ltd whose other local project is Triton Palace in Palm Cove.

More awards to Cove

FOLLOWING this year's awards for Australia's Cleanest Beach and Queensland's Friendliest Beach as well as a multitude of dining and tourism awards over the years, Cove has just won a few more.

CASMAR RESTAURANT & BAR has just been judged Best Informal Dining for 2003. This prestigious award by the Queensland Restaurant and Catering Association was made at Cairns International Hotel last month.

Robert van den Hoven, who did not enter Apres Bar & Grill in the Informal Dining section but did in other sections, was full of praise for Casmar.

"They deserved the award. Not only are they nice people, they also have a vision," he said. Casmar proprietors Kelvin and Jan Evans said they were thrilled with the win.

APRES BAR & GRILL's two apprentices, Adam White and Anthony Dodd, were silver and bronze winners in the internationally recognized Toques Blances Culinary Arts Competition held at Cairns Central Shopping Centre recently.

SARAH BACON, who patrols Palm Cove Beach, has just won Queensland Lifeguard of the Year."It was a huge shock," she said. "My greatest achievements are just everyday things."

TONY WORBOYS shot an albatross on the 247metre, par 4, 18th hole at Novotel Gold Club last month.

No, it wasn't a real live bird. An albatross is a score of three under par, and it's a rare bird indeed.

The resident club's professional hit a drive that reached the green (most good golfers take two shots). Local supermarket owner Tony Lenthall said he saw it happen.

"We were having a quiet drink after the game and saw this magnificent drive. To our amazement, the ball rolled right into the hole," he said.

Finally, AFL legend MALCOLM BLIGHT, we believe, has relocated from the Gold Coast to Cedar Road.

Clinton purchase a rumor only

WHEN Channel 9's "The Today Show" announced they had heard Bill Clinton had bought an apartment in Palm Cove, the rumor went around it was at Angsana.

But confirming the news has been difficult. Angsana management, real estate agents, and others in a position to know were all tight-lipped when interviewed by Palm Cove News. Although we have heard Clinton has stayed before at Palm Cove, we must, however, treat the affair as only a rumor.

Backpackers re-opens

PALM COVE RETREAT is back in business. The backpacker establishment closed its doors in February because of a massive hike in public liability insurance premiums.

Owner Terry Warren said he had negotiated a more competitive premium with an offshore company. "Business continues as before," he said.

Palm Cove a mecca for spa lovers?

MASSAGE THERAPISTS in Tropical North Queensland are gaining international recognition with Palm Cove set to become a leader.

When Silky Oaks Lodge & Healing Waters at Mossman took out top honors in American Airlines In-Flight Magazine, resort manager Shane McNally said spa treatment lovers sat up and took notice.

"We pushed out the well-known Banyan Tree in Indonesia to second place and Chive-Som in Thailand to fourth," he said.

Palm Cove has two five-star health spas at Angsana and Sebel Reef House with another two - Outrigger Beach Club and Sanctuary Palm Cove - coming on line by the end of the year.

Tourism Palm Cove president Alex Whyte said the number of quality spas being developed will readily give Palm Cove the name of being a "Five-Spa Resort!"

Spas at Angsana and Sebel Reef House both feature beautiful Asian therapists who are well-trained not only in massage but also in the use of oils, fragrances, natural extracts, and body wraps, he said.

Spa treatments at Angsana range in price from $75 to $175 (Aust.dollars), the latter lasting three hours and described by Angsana as "the ultimate pampering spa including a body wrap or scrub, 60-minute massage, and 60-minute facial treatment."

Body wraps can be of banana, potato, Canadian bog mud, Aloe Vera, or Thai herbs such as prai, sandalwood, or turmeric.

At Reef House, spas range from $65 to the three-hour Bijarril-The Dreaming for $350, which promises "to evoke the potent forces of the earth upon the giver and receiver...a vibration designed to reconnect the mind, body, and soul." Wow.
