No fun in the sun for Cove
|
Editorial | |||||||||||||||||
|
THE traditional Fun in the Sun Day is probably no more at Palm Cove. The Reef Festival beach day will be at Trinity Beach instead on Sunday, October 14th from 8am-3pm. Event organiser Ms Charlie Seddon said the programme will be identical to past programmes at Palm Cove. "Because of reduced support from sponsors at Palm Cove over the past few years, we couldn't raise the necessary funds, and the committee made a decision to give Trinity Beach a try," she told Palm Cove News. |
It will still be a fun day for all the family, she said. "I'm sure Palm Cove families won't mind a quick trip down to Trinity Beach for a change." Cr Sno Bonneau said a small licensed area at the northern end of the beach on the road below the hotel will be set aside for people wishing to purchase alcohol. "Licensed premises excepted, there will be a ban on alcohol for the remainder of the beach area. The main stage will be situated at the southern end, some distance from the licensed area," he said. |

THE COMMENDABLE performance at Pisces by fifteen girls from a local dance academy was an eye-opener for anyone thinking we had a dearth of culture in the bush. We are still talking about the Innifail girls who had professionalism, energy, and grace. My wife and I were regular theatre-goers in Melbourne and Adelaide before we moved to Cairns, and we thought good plays, concerts, and musicals would be in short supply. Six years down the track and we have never failed to be amazed at the quality presented here. Perhaps Cairns imported the talent and the producers from the south; perhaps the locals had the ability to start with. But one thing's for sure : we have plenty of excellent live theatre right here in Cairns. Who needs Melbourne!

Flashy entrance needed at highway
|
THE ENTRANCE to Palm Cove on the highway should be much more attractive than it is, Sebel Reef House manager Tony Marrinan says. He said we needed something like the Paradise Palms entrance. "The whole world knows about Cairns; and, thanks to Bill Clinton and other world leaders, it now knows about Port Douglas. But the world doesn't necessarily know |
about Palm Cove," he said. "People driving along the highway to Port Douglas need something eye-catching to entice them to make a quick detour and look us over. And once they have a look at what Palm Cove can offer, surely they will go home and tell people about it, or come and stay here next time." Cr Sno Bonneau said the Main Roads Dept is still considering future traffic arrangements for Palm Cove and expects to make a recommendation to Council soon.

Free concert & movie by Jama Dreaming
|
WE ADVISED in May edition that Greg Singh and his indigenous dancers and singers would give a free concert and film showing in Palm Cove on August 16th. Greg and his troupe are still touring Europe and we are unsure of the date and venue. We will advise further.

BBQs nice, but - | |||||||||||||||||
|
OUR new BBQ areas on the esplanade are quite popular, says caravan park caretaker Geof Davis; but perhaps they have been a little too popular. Geof said the lights have been blazing |
all night, and the young people have partied on until the late hours. "We had to get our sleep, and so did our resident guests," he said. Council has just fitted timer switches which turn off the lights at 8.30pm.

Triton St bridge set to begin
|
THE BRIDGE extending Triton St is about to be built, Cr Sno Bonneau says. A new resort will be built on beachfront land across the creek from Angsana Resort and Spa. Another beachfront lot next to the proposed resort has no immediate plans for development. Both lots adjoin a large Daikyo-owned area. "Eventually, the Triton St bridge will connect to Cook Highway," he said.

Veivers Road a bit scrappy
|
TALPA CLOSE resident David de Bernardi says he's a bit ashamed of Veivers Road. "Visitors to Palm Cove all come down Veivers Road and there is no gutter on the |
right hand side. It's a bit scrappy," he said, adding that the main thoroughfare into a top suburb like Palm Cove shouldn't look like a farmyard. David said he is about to take up a petition to see if other Palm Cove residents think the same.

WE WERE WRONG | |||||||||||||||||
|
|
In last month's edition, we said author Bill Bryson and a friend visited Palm Cove and wrote: "Our hotel (it was Reef House) was, in everything but name, setting and price, a motel..." But it was not Reef House as we thought. Bryson paid Palm Cove a second visit with wife and family and at that time they stayed at Reef House.

Oh, la la, French was fab

A PACKAGE of gorgeous girls did the Can-Can at Pisces Restaurant on July 14th when 100 guests attended to celebrate Bastille Day . Invited to Cairns for the local Alliance Francaise celebration, fifteen girls from Innisfail's Dance Works Academy performed the popular dance and other routines from the film Moulin Rouge. |
Restaurateur Frenchman Frank Hischier couldn't have been happier with the dancers. "They danced the Can Can and other routines to perfection - a fitting presentation for France's birthday," he said. Chef Craig Field put on a buffet of quality French cuisine which, of course, included French Onion Soup. There are about 2,000 French expatriates in the Cairns region.
