Australia's largest pool

Mango Lagoon Resort & Wellness Spa, the 100 room resort on Cedar Road which opened its doors last week, not only has a healthy crop of mango trees out front but also the longest swimming pool in the country.
Measuring 150m in length and consisting of four separate pools joined with waterfalls and bridges, the sparkling clear water is overlooked by luxury airconditioned apartments featuring large rooms, top-class furnishings, and kitchen facilities. There is even a 50m lap pool.
Owners Don Richmond and son Paul developed the one-hectare site.
"Paul did 90% of the work and it's a real showpiece," said Don. "We have appointed Jeremy Yap as general manager."
Jeremy, from Hilton Hotels, Asian hotels, and Adelaide and Cairns Convention Centres, said the resort would operate a restaurant and a wellness spa. Holistic therapy would be available.
Most of the apartments have already been sold to private owners/investors.
"The public is invited to inspect the premises, but please make an appointment," Jeremy said. Phone 4055 3400.

Thakral's enormous green space

THAKRAL'S 60 hectare development is "a good thing for Palm Cove," chief development project manager Jeff Kahler says.
Announcing plans to Tourism Palm Cove members at their annual general meeting on October 20th, he said Thakral had allowed for 20 hectares of parks and roads which represented 40 percent of total area.
"This is an enormous amount of green space," he said.
Mr Kahler said the natural environment would be maintained, declaring that "cutting down trees was not Palm Cove."
A total of 3,600 people including visitors is allowed for and approved for the site. Residents could be in occupation as early as March next year, he said.
The area extends from Sweet Creek to Clifton Beach and from the highway to the beach, excluding Sea Temple and Triton Palace sites.
THAKRAL KEEPS GROWING
Not content with purchasing Daikyo's 60 ha of land in Palm Cove and developing Amphora Resort and also Cairns Trilogy Towers, Thakral has recently purchased a 4,643 sq m site at Broadbeach for $17.95m.
Commencing construction early next year, the company plans to build a $107m 30 storey tower on the site.

Cooking lessons continue

FIRST we had lessons on seafood, then Italian dishes, making pasta, appreciating wine, and now making cheese.
Cheese-making classes were conducted at Sanctuary Palm Cove Resort in mid November by Dr Mark Potter, PhD.
Announcing a limit of 15 people for one lesson only, 40 enrolled and Mark had no option but to hold three classes.
Participants learnt how to create their own ricotta, fetta, and camembert cheeses.

Australia Day

WATCH OUT for this one! Australia Day has been celebrated at Yorkey's Knob in past years with large crowds attending. But this time it's at Palm Cove.
Alex Whyte says the focus will be the Surf Lifesaving Club's events and other events. He has few details at this early stage (there'll be a letterdrop) but Yorkey's attendance was magnificent and a credit to the organizers.
With Palm Cove's ever-growing popularity in Cairns, there could be an even larger turn-out here.
